Full Day Professional Learning Workshop

Full Day Professional Learning Workshop

This fun, interactive and hands-on workshop is held each school term in various locations around the metropolitan area.

This workshop provides an introduction to waste issues, case studies and training on setting up a whole school approach to waste minimisation and education.

Participants receive a kit of resources, advice and practical ideas to implement at their school.

The workshop is free and teacher relief is paid for each teacher who attends. More than one participant per school is welcome and participants may include teachers, principals, registrars, cleaners, gardeners, canteen managers, parents/guardians, members of the P&C or any other school staff member.

A committee will help share the responsibility of coordinating and planning your Waste Wise program. Include a good cross section of your school community and incorporate students.

Waste Audit

Waste Audit

A waste audit is an evaluation of the waste that your school produces. It allows you determine two things;

  • how much waste your school produces
  • what type of waste is produced.

It can also be a valuable way of measuring improvement over time as your Waste Wise program develops. The information gathered from a waste audit can be used to identify items to be reduced, reused and recycled.

Waste audit kits are available for Waste Wise schools.

Waste Wise Plan

Waste Wise Plan

A Waste Wise plan outlines the actions a school wishes to complete and includes a timeline for implementation. This helps to organise activities into a logical sequence and realistic timeline.

Waste Wise Policy

Waste Wise Policy

The Waste Wise policy is a written statement of intent. It is important to have a Waste Wise policy for the following reasons;

  • helps imbed Waste Wise values in school and community
  • creates a supportive school environment
  • fosters a whole school approach
  • informs and guides daily practice and ensures quality of this
  • includes step by step priorities for all to see

The policy should be approved and signed by the school principal.

Half Day Follow Up Workshop

Held at an established Waste Wise School, this informal workshop will include school updates, discussion of problems and solutions and a tour of the host school

Waste Wise Schools Grant

Waste Wise Schools Grant

The Waste Wise Schools grants are intended to assist schools in setting up sustainable waste minimisation projects through infrastructure and other waste education resources. Waste Wise schools must have completed a waste audit, waste policy and waste plan before they are eligible to apply.

Van Visit

Van Visit

The van offers a series of interactive lessons tailored to different levels from kindergarten to year 12, on a variety of Waste Wise topics including the 3R's, worms, composting etc. The Waste Wise Schools van is available to visit participating Waste Wise schools that have completed a waste audit, written a waste policy and written a waste plan.

Curriculum

Curriculum

A best practice approach to waste education involves the integration of waste-conscious school operating practices and curriculum. A key focus is to use waste as a theme within learning areas rather than an ‘add-on' which requires extra time. All the activities in the Waste Wise process can be integrated into curriculum linked lessons.
